Last night me and my mate pulled the rear suspension unit out of the Jag. simple enough procedure actually, but fuck is it heavy :S nearly 50kg of diff alone + wishbones, driveshafts, hubs, brakes and carrier subframe. Stuck it on a little trolley so I can wheel it around while I swap the diff to a powerlock one :)

I'm looking, but I can't see any speed holes drilled in the Jaaaaaag yet.
What's the odd-looking angular white van/lorry thingy? Or is that just a normal Tranny parked in front of something else white?

Oh, 'an hub brake' . Oh, I say, we are grand, aren't we? 'Oh, oh, no more buttered scones for me, mater. I'm off to play the grand piano'. 'Pardon me while I use my hub brakes.' Now get to disassembly!

Yeah it's a Transit parked in front of a garage with glare from the roof :S
There must be a hell of a lot of acreage that I can drill holes in on this thing :) next job after the bushes ;)

Shame, it looked like something interesting :)
I can't believe how much space you have there. I've got to move somewhere like that, probably pay the same as for a flat round here.

I'm insanely lucky to have this much space. We could probably fit 4 or 5 more cars if we parked them more efficiently and moved the piles of building rubble around :)
Land down here is pricey, but you could probably buy a sizeable chunk of the Midlands for not much at all...

Well, it's all relative. You can buy whole square kilometres in some parts of the world for that kind of money. But you're under an hour from Central London, aren't you?

Just about yeah, and that jacks the price up a lot. We've had to muck in with my grandma and grandpa who sold their big old place in croydon and moved in with us to afford it :S

"Just about yeah, and that jacks the price up a lot."
I'm afraid that's because of all the people like me going 'god that looks cheap'. It takes me about an hour to get into Central London at rush hour, so in a way you're no further out.
"We've had to muck in with my grandma and grandpa who sold their big old place in croydon and moved in with us to afford it"
Do you have a tax accountant in the family? ;)
I was about to say that I could never live with my in-laws, but then I remembered that they're currently planning on building some kind of tourist eco-camp out in the rainforest in Trinidad, so it's more of a toss-up: my mother-in-law versus a free home in paradise.

That's a tricky one. Plenty of poisonous critters in rainforests. Just get cozy enough for them to write you into the will...
I wish we did, would probably have made it a lot simpler...

Oh no, nothing tries to kill you in Trinidad. Well, nothing that doesn't walk on two legs, anyway.
"I wish we did, would probably have made it a lot simpler..."
That's why I was asking about having a tax accountant in the family. What you've got is a good way to get around IHT.

So you're right...
Hah :) I wouldn't put it past my parents to have thought of that. They're sharp-as :)

Oh, did anything come of the Volvo 480? And how's the E30 coming along?

"I wouldn't put it past my parents to have thought of that. They're sharp-as :)"
I'd hope so - you get to their age, you'll (hopefully) also have to start worrying about stuff like this. A couple of simple bits of paperwork can save £00k's, and yet it's amazing how many people leave it unattended to until it's too late.
Talking of leaving things unattended...
"how's the E30 coming along?"
Er... Technically, I guess you could say I've made progress, in that I've now cleared my dad's garage so I have somewhere to work on it - that was a full day's job - and I've got the Camry now so I won't have to rush the E30 back onto the road. Other than that, bugger-all's happened, partly because I've been busy, but mainly because it's been so fucking cold and wet. I've got a line on a bunch of cheap parts for it, but they're coming from Europe via a friend of a friend so it's taking a while.
And I still need to work out how to get the thing to my parents' so I can work on it. Can't tow it with a tow-rope because it's not taxed, MOT'd or insured. Know anyone round here with a car trailer? It's only a couple of miles, so maybe I can just slip one of the local garages a few quid to sort it.
I have to get absolutely everything ready first, though, and then fix it all in one go. If a project car turns up in my dad's driveway for more than a couple of days, he will scrap it.
"did anything come of the Volvo 480?"
Just regrets. I decided the last thing I needed was a second third unroadworthy vehicle sitting outside.

"mainly because it's been so fucking cold and wet"
Tell me about it. I've only just got round to dropping the rear suspension on the '40 because every day I've set aside to do it has been miserable and wet. Didn't particularly fancy lying under a car while water pours down my neck...
Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a trailer. Would certainly save me £90 a pop to go pick up cars. I've been thinking of welding my own one together. A load of box-section steel is going to be a lot cheaper than the £1000 it costs to get a ready-made one...
Giving a local garage a ring and a couple of quid might be a good idea, especially if they're not particularly busy at the time. Just got to find one that's a little enterprising :)

I was just looking on ebay, and it appears you can get a secondhand one for half that. But then I started thinking about how strong caravan chassis are, because you can buy a rolling caravan for a hundred quid or so, and that'll have pretty much everything you need.
Arf, I just had a thought. Yes, the E30 will theoretically fit inside a LWB Transit... with about 3cm all round.

What a brilliant idea. Buy a caravan in crap condition, have fun wrecking the caravan bit, weld on a winch and some metal plate for flooring and make up some ramps and job's a good-un :)
Is that 'fit in a LWB transit' or 'fit inside a LWB transit - the space that the rear wheel arches take up'.
Been stung by that before...

Ooh, fancy schmancy. I was thinking just bolt on a sheet of 25mm marine ply and be done with.

Good catch. That was 'load width', but on further inspection, turns out the width between the wheel-arches isn't quite wide enough. A Luton box or dropside would do just fine - but really it's immaterial, because even hiring a van for just a couple of hours will cost more than I'd expect to pay someone with a towtruck to move the car ten minutes down the road for me.

10 minutes down the road? Have a couple of strong mates that would help push it for beers?
We might have some proper hardboard knocking around from all the building work. I sense another project coming along...

"10 minutes down the road? Have a couple of strong mates that would help push it for beers?"
10 minutes driving. Quite a bit more than that pushing. But that still counts as taking it on the road, so might as well just tow it if I'm going to take the risk.
"I sense another project coming along..."
Awesome. I'll give you a hand if you come and move the BMW when it's done ;)

Nice. Although now I'm worrying about what weight a caravan chassis is made to support, having thought about it a bit more. I assume the smaller ones don't weigh very much.

Yeah I've seen that most single axle caravan chassis' are rated for 850kg load. Not really enough for a car trailer, but if I can find a double-axle one that should be much better :)

Well, should be just enough for the Spit :)
Which of your fleet would you tow it with? The Lada?

Probably the Jaaag. Big heavy car with lots of torque and decent brakes. I've got a factory tow ball off eBay that needs a bit of cleaning up then fitting :)
